How to book a New York DMV appointment in 2026
Updated October 2026
Book online
- Open the DMV appointment site: https://dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/get-a-learner-permit.
- Pick the office closest to you. Smaller offices often have shorter waits.
- Choose the service: usually "Learner permit" or "Knowledge test" for the written exam.
- Pick a date and time. Mornings are usually less crowded.
- Enter your contact details — most states text or email a confirmation.
What to bring
Bring the same documents you would for a regular application (see our Documents guide). Pay the application fee online if the site allows it — it saves time at the counter.
Walk-ins
Some New York DMV offices accept a limited number of walk-ins each day, often in the morning. Walk-in wait times and hours vary a lot between offices and over time — the DMV site or a phone call is the most reliable way to confirm.
If you have to reschedule
Cancellation and no-show rules are set by DMV and change over time. Most agencies let you cancel for free a day or two ahead; last-minute cancellations may be recorded on your profile and repeat no-shows can limit your ability to book for a while. Confirm the current rule on the DMV site.
For the New York road test
Behind-the-wheel tests are usually scheduled separately from the written test, after you have held your permit for the required period. The DMV site has a separate calendar for road tests.
