New York permit test 2026: questions, passing score and retakes

How to prepare

  1. Read the official New York driver handbook, available on the DMV site: dmv.ny.gov.
  2. Work through practice mode one topic at a time and read the explanation for every question you miss.
  3. Then use the exam simulator and keep going until you pass it consistently.

Before test day

Document requirements, fees, age rules and appointment booking differ by situation and change over time. Check them on the official DMV site before you go: dmv.ny.gov.

The written test requires 14 correct answers out of 20, including at least two of the four road-sign questions. Study the official manual and its chapter quizzes. Use the DMV permit application and document guide to select a Standard, REAL ID or Enhanced permit; required proof and fees depend on age and the document type.
